Q. How does bio-energy differ from reiki?

A. The concepts of healing energy were first recorded as far as we know in India and China. Every traditional culture has had its healers, shamans, sages, etc, all with the ability to work with energy to aid healing in numerous ways.

In its broadest sense “bio-energy” simply refers to the biological or life-giving energy system of the body. In Japan, from where reiki was brought to the West, “reiki” simply means healing energy. In essence bio-energy, reiki and other healing systems that utilise “energy” are types of energy medicine that do have a lot in common. Each healing modality within the field of energy medicine does the same thing: they all work by removing blockages from the energy system that allow the body to restore itself back to health. It is therefore the traditions and how the treatments are administered that truly can be said to differentiate bio-energy from reiki as we know them in the West today.

Whereas bio-energy may have first been recorded in the East, practical traditions have continued to persist both there and further a field into Eastern Europe to the present day. This suggests that in Europe the Healing Arts were no different from other parts of traditional culture that was practiced, taught and passed down within an oral tradition until we adopted the written framework for practicing, teaching and passing on traditions and information.
It appears to have been a very recent advent, within the last half of the twentieth century that a Western system of bio-energy training appeared that was fixed, standardised and taught as complete system in Europe and North America.

Reiki, the system that we know, is said to have been “re-discovered” in 1922, Japan, by Dr Usui, a Buddhist priest after he underwent a period of spiritual enlightenment.
Reiki, as taught initially by Dr Usui in the oral tradition, was part of a spiritual way of life. It was taught in the Eastern method of Master to pupil by means of an “attunement”. It is this that allows a pupil to become a channel for reiki energy. Reiki also utilizes several healing symbols.
Although reiki was brought to the West in the 1930’s it didn't mushroom in popularity until the early 1990’s after reiki, the healing system, had been put into written format and the teaching format opened up which is similar to what is happening now with bio-energy.
Although the attunement process and the use of symbols are not unique to reiki it is a distinct marker between it and bio-energy.

In bio-energy the practitioner is working with cosmic and earth energy and is using techniques which are mainly active. What an onlooker would see is a practitioner doing a lot of work around a client. Some people describe it as the practitioner doing Tai Chi or dancing around a client. Reiki practitioners connect into reiki, pull it into their system then emit it through the hands in a very passive way. What an onlooker would see is a very quiet traditional type of healing session, far less the viewing spectacle of the two.

Bio-energy can be given to a client standing, sitting or lying. Reiki is usually given lying or sitting. Bio-energy is mostly hands off and reiki can be either hands on or hands off.

Both traditions teach remote healing.

Some people prefer to practice one or the other and some clients prefer to receive one or the other. Others trained in both, use both. This is merely a matter of personal taste. Both provide good ways of working with energy which will benefit the energetic health of a client.

No comparative work has been done to show which one is “better” than the other. Indeed experts such as Jim Oschman believe that it is the quality of the practitioner and not the tradition that they come from that makes one person likely to achieve greater therapeutic effect than another.
It is because of this that so much focus of the coursework will be on you and your personal development.

Bio-Energy Therapy Session Questions

Q. What Can I Expect From a Session?

A. Sessions usually last about one hour. During this time you will be asked for your medical history and what you would like help with. The practitioner will ask you to stand, sit or lie down, fully clothed, on a treatment couch. Some practitioners play soothing music. Most people take this opportunity to relax and drifty off but you can speak if you wish.

For the majority of the session the practitioner will be working in the bio-field; this means mainly hands off. At times the practitioner will touch specific areas of the body. Sessions are flexible so do say if this may be a problem for you.

Some people can “feel” their energies being worked and some don’t. It makes no difference to the potential outcome if you can feel anything or not.

Clients often report sensations of heat, cold, numbness or tingling in the body. This is simply a person being sensitive to energy flow and nothing to be concerned about. Others can feel their body wanting to move. Again this is normal for those who experience it and it is simply the body trying to help the practitioner move trapped energy.
Others can see colours in their minds eyes and this is normal for those who are sensitive to seeing energy itself in their inner world.
Others simply think of what they’re planning to cook for dinner.

This means that there is no single thing to expect. We are all individuals and our experiences with bio-energy are unique to us.

At the end of the session you will be asked what you experienced and some feedback will be given to you on what the practitioner found when working with you.

Some people find the whole experience relaxing and others invigorating. Occasionally people may have a stronger reaction to the treatment and feel tired. Returning to the outside world and taking a few deep breaths usually sorts this.

Q. Will I “Detox” from these sessions?

A. Most people do not experience detox and indeed feel better after a session.

However all forms of complementary medicine offer a potential to detox and this may mean a temporary exacerbation of symptoms. Bio-energy Therapy works on a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level and therefore detoxing can take place on any of these levels. We believe that this is simply blockages coming up to the surface to be released. It is important to know that if something appears to go awry after a session it may be part of the treatment effect.

Physical level detoxing can mean that your symptoms may get temporarily worse although this is not the norm in clinical practice. People sometimes report increased visits to the washroom, increased thirst and a change in dreaming patterns.

Some people do find that they feel emotional; this can be teary or angry. The advice from us if this happens to you is get it out of your system! Music and exercise are perfect for this. If you deliberately make a space for these feeling to come out you will get over them more quickly.
Make a quiet space for yourself, listening to love songs and giving yourself permission to cry your eyes out is very effective. It doesn’t matter what you cry about; what is important is that you get any emotional blockage out of your system. You do get to the end of it. Similarly if you feel angry remove yourself from others and do some vigorous exercise. A run to the point of exhaustion, scrubbing the tub or putting on heavy rock music, and really digging it, works. Again you will get to the end of it.

Mental Detox is rarer and can manifest in two ways; either the mind becomes completely blank as if it’s gone on vacation or it seems to want to work doubly fast. If this happens, again this will be temporary. Taking an hour to yourself, looking at something beautiful and observing your breathing works wonders.

Spiritual Detox is rarest off all. Very occasionally a person may have a spiritual awakening or a crisis of current faith. This is simply the letting go of old blockages that were either stopping you from having a more spiritual life or it’s simply your time to examine what does your faith really mean to you.

If you do experience any of these please know that once the blockage has cleared your system will be clearer and lighter. Once again though the above is not common, it can occur.

Q. How many sessions will I need?

A. Initially we always recommend that you have as series of four sessions.

After that you and your practitioner may agree that more would be beneficial. For some, four sessions is enough whilst others like to keep regular appointments and get “topped up”.
As Bio-energy Therapy can be used to help balance any area of your life some people can come for help with say, a sore shoulder and feel confident enough to later want to tackle emotional upset. If this may be a possibility for you then you can discuss this with your practitioner. You should never feel railroaded into making appointments.

Q. Will it work and is it safe for my baby or child?

A. Most practitioners are happy to treat babies and children.
We all have energy fields and generally the younger we are the fewer blockages we have.
Working with children is slightly different from working with adults. Children and babies normally require shorter appointments. They reach the “I’ve had enough” level that many adults never experience.
Children are usually more sensitive to energy work and often report feeling sensations more so than adults.
We do require a parent or guardian to be present.

Q. Can Bio-energy Therapy help my pet or animal?

A. Again all living creatures have energy fields and can therefore benefit from sessions. Not all practitioners like working with animals whilst others specialize in this area. Ask your local practitioner or contact the UHI to find out who may be able to help.

Most animals adore energy work. Working with them is often fun as they often present the part of their body that they wish to be worked on at any moment- usually it’s their bottom! Not surprising that it would be their root chakra having to put up with us as owners…

Sessions are usually shorter as animals simply get up and walk away when they’ve had enough or fall asleep.

Q. Do I have to come to a clinic?

A. Some practitioners offer a home visit service whilst others solely work from their clinic. Ask your local practitioner or call the UHI who will be able to answer your queries.

Bio-energy can be done anywhere as it doesn’t require any special equipment. Many experienced practitioners will tell you stories of giving sessions in fields, on the beach, in a toilet, in an airport and, with doctors and nursing consent, in hospitals.

Some practitioners specialize in remote sessions. This means that you can be at home and they elsewhere. A specialist practitioner can tune in and work on your energy from a different location- even different country!

Q. Is it safe to use Bio-energy alongside my medication or other complementary therapies?

A. Yes. Bio-energy is working on your bio-field which in turn works on the body. Medication is developed to work on specific receptor sites in the body. We are therefore working on a different level that your medication does. Your practitioner will never instruct you stop taking your medication. Sometimes as your health improves you may need to review your medication with your physician and we strongly advise that you do this.
It is common, however, for people to seek out therapies such as Bio-energy Therapy, to help combat the side-effects of drugs.

Bio-energy Therapy can be combined with other therapies successfully. It is a specific way of working with the body’s energy field and therefore doesn’t interfere with the mechanisms of how other therapies work. Most people do not choose to try several therapies at once. However others like to utilise different therapies to target different aspects of their health and general well-being.

We believe that a body always knows what may help it and we wish to honour this.

One of the aims of UHI is to build bridges between orthodox and complementary medicine and open up dialogue between different complementary disciplines for the benefit of the client and the health of the nation at large.

Reiki Training Questions

Q: How long is the training for Reiki?

A: Reiki Level I is held one day a week and Level II is held two days a week over the period of four weeks. Master Level is held over the period of one year, where student and teacher meet once a week and the student is required to assist the teacher in courses for the duration of their training.

Q: Is the training difficult?

A: No, in the class students are taken through series of experiences to help them understand Reiki energy and develop strong connection with it. Students go through healing shifts, for some the shifts are more challenging than others, however for majority of time, the shifts are gentle. It is recommended that students take it easy the day after the training to allow their bodies to adjust to the new frequency.

Q. Where can I learn to do this?

A. With us at UHI, or with a number of training organizations across Canada and throughout the world.

Q: What happens after the training?

A: After completing Reiki Level I, students have enough tools to maintain their own energy field and bring their life to balance, creating optimum health for themselves. After competing Reiki Level II, students have the necessary skills to start their practice as Reiki Practitioners. They can start on their own, or they can become UHI members and we will assist them with the starting point, additionally we will be part of their support system during their career in Energy Medicine area. After completing Master/Teacher level, student will be well equipped to start her/his career as a Teacher on their own, or as a member of UHI staff.

Energy Medicine General Inquiries

Q: What is Energy Medicine?

A: The term "energy medicine" has been in general use since the founding of the non-profit International Society for the Study of Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine in the 1980s and was further defined by two books, each titled Energy Medicine, one which is a guide for practitioners and one which surveys existing research evidence. Energy medicine often proposes that imbalances in the body's "energy field" result in illness, and that by re-balancing the body's energy field health can be restored. There are many modalities in Energy Medicine. For example: Body Talk, Therapeutic Touch, Reflexology etc. At UHI we specialize in two, Reiki and Bio-Energy Therapy.

Q: Do you have any tools or resources that can help me learn and understand on my own?

A: Yes, we do. When you go to “Experience the Flow” page, you can view samples of projects we have created regarding Universal Laws as well as taking you on a journey through the chakra system, which will help you understand your behavioral patterns. It will give you practical tools on how to go about the change you want to create; also you can download short meditations to help you create a strong foundation for your journey of life.

Q: Do you travel to present seminars, do training, or offer sessions outside of your city?

A: We do travel across Canada and USA for seminars and training. However minimum attendance of participants is required to cover the cost of our travels, when this criterion is met, we are happy to accommodate any needs that arise. When it comes to sessions, we can create a 4 day clinic anywhere in the world as long as we have enough clients to take advantage of our services. Our Practitioners do remote healing as well and that could be a route you might want to explore further.

Q: What are the Universal Laws?

A: Everything in this universe runs under universal laws. To be in the flow - to live in harmony with these laws - leads you to being all-round prosperous. Such harmony results in effortless well-being and prosperity, simply because you would be riding the currents that build and maintain all creation. To put it in another way, a universal law is a bond that connects all experience so as to achieve total knowing.

Q: What is the Chakra System?

A: Chakra system (comprised of the seven major chakras) is our energetic connection to the realm of pure consciousness and our spiritual essence. The energetic operations in them are what make every aspect of our bodily, emotional, mental and spiritual life possible. Each of the seven major chakras, or primary energy centers, has its own character and corresponds to a unique aspect of our being. They are patterns of energy, and are shaped something like funnels or whirlpools of energy. Because the chakra system is the central processing center for every aspect of our being, blockage or other energetic dysfunction in the chakras usually gives rise to disorders in the body, mind or spirit. A defect in the energy flow through any given chakra will result in a defect in the energy provided to certain portions of the physical body, as well as impairment in the entire energy field’s ability to process energy—affecting all levels of the being. This is because the energy field is a holistic entity; every part of it affects every other part.

Q: What is meditation?

A: Meditation means awareness. Whatever you do with awareness is meditation. "Watching your breath" is meditation; listening to the birds is meditation. As long as these activities are free from any other distraction to the mind, it is effective meditation. Meditation means 'a cessation of the thought process'. It describes a state of consciousness, when the mind is free of scattered thoughts and various patterns. While there are many different methods of meditation, the end goal for all of the methods leads to a mind that is quieted and free from stress by the use of quiet contemplation and reflection.

Q: How long do I need to meditate?

A: There really is no set “right” length of time for the meditation to be effective so that you can benefit the rewards from it. For those who are ‘head strong’ sitting for an hour or two is simply impossible, especially if they are just starting to learn to meditate. I would suggest starting with two minute simple meditation where you concentrate on your breath, every time your mind wonders into different areas, you simply get your full attention back to your breath. As you practice this simple meditation, you will already notice difference in your life. With time, you might want to meditate for a longer period of time, I would then slowly stretch to ten minute meditations and so on. If you are leading a busy life, twenty minutes a day is plenty. If you have time and enjoy meditations, one hour or more is great as well. It all depends on the individual’s needs and desires.
